Technology Death Row

The thing with new technologies is they tend to set the older ones aside. As we go into the future, we’re going to see some of the technologies we know today, going to die a silent death in lieu of more improved ones. Here are just some of the few technologies that are not going to move into the future with the rest of them all.Power cablesNo one would really mourn the lack of power cables. In fact, many computer users would rather not have them. It’s not uncommon to hear of accounts of people on the go failing to pack their power cables at the last minute and they had to buy replacements or get their units shipped to wherever they are. It would only be a matter of time before power becomes wireless as well.Disk based storageOne of the most popular new technologies that has come up in the recent years is the SSD or solid-state hard drive. This comes with a set of advantages that disk-based storage doesn’t have. For one, flash memory is faster so it cuts down on seek and startup times. It is also more reliable so the market for the old platter-based hard drive is constantly shrinking. This is a big gain to the managed hosting industry. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that we wouldn’t see a lot of the disk-based drives anymore. Flash memory is still a lot more expensive so people are still going to use the conventional hard drive for a longer time.LandlinesThese are hangovers from the 20th century. Wireless technology has managed to reach more people at a lesser cost and more efficiency than landlines can. And while dedicated fiber links are still essential for high bandwidth connections, WiFi and WiMax will soon remove the necessity for the landline for about 90 percent of the population.
