Mobile Broadband to Expand Forty Fold in Coming Years

Coda Research Consultancy has conducted a study, which indicates that by 2017, mobile broadband usage will increase by forty times to reach 418 million worldwide. The average monthly consumption will be 1.8 exabytes, thus greatly enhancing the total broadband usage.

The unprecedented broadband growth predicted in this forecast is expected to be driven by Asia-Pacific region, with smaller increases happening in Europe. Irrespective of Europe’s relative lower growth, it will still grow by 135%, and will reach a base of 94 million users by that time. The US will record a consumer base of 58 million while the Middle East and Africa will experience considerable growth that will take their total number of subscribers to 48 million by 2017.

It has also been predicted by the Consultancy that LTE, the next technology in mobile broadband that will come into commercial use by 2012, will be quite successful. In fact, many countries will bypass the intermediate phase of 3G technology and jump straight up to LTE – more on compare mobile broadband here.

Steve Smith, founder of Coda Research, however, cautions service providers about the risks in profitability that this situation might create. Even though the total consumption base will increase to generate good business for operators, device manufacturers and vendors, the drop in per unit revenue will call for an optimum level of efficiency from operators to maintain a good level of profits.
